Twenty-seven more medical institutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have been granted to use drugs and medical devices from the two special administrative regions, it was announced on Monday.

This is part of a measure launched in 2021 to allow the pilot introduction of drugs and medical devices that have been used in Hong Kong and Macao for urgent clinical needs in Greater Bay Area cities.

Following the addition of this new group of facilities, located across eight mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area, the total number of designated medical institutions under the measure reached 71, according to authorities in Guangdong province.

Compared to previous batches, this addition includes more outstanding medical institutions beyond Guangzhou and Shenzhen, accounting for about half of the newly added facilities. The selection features public and private hospitals, a children's hospital and a traditional Chinese medicine facility.

The Foshan C-MER Eye Hospital, part of a medical group founded by Hong Kong ophthalmologist Dennis Lam Shun-chiu, was removed from the overall list due to suspension of operations.

Since 2021, Guangdong has released three batches of designated medical institutions under the measure. To date, 40 different medicines and medical devices have been introduced from Hong Kong and Macao, benefiting approximately 17,000 patients.
